Who is Minka Kent? Life and Career

Minka Kent is a graduate of Iowa State University.

She started as a romance novelist, but she has always secretly wanted to venture into the suspense thriller genre. However, she was terrified to step away from the familiar – that is until she read Never Smile at Strangers by Jennifer Jaynes. The two got to chatting, and eventually became good friends.

When Kent was hesitant to publish her first book, the Memory Watcher, Jennifer was her biggest cheerleader; she supported and encouraged Kent every step of the way, until she finally decided to publish it. The two remained good friends, until Jennifer sadly passed away on December 2019.

While relatively new to the suspense thriller genre, Kent is definitely making her mark with notable works like The Memory Watcher (2016) and The Thinnest Air (2018)

The Memory Watcher (2016) was an immediate hit – it reached #9 in the Kindle store and was listed on the Amazon Most Sold chart. Her third book, The Thinnest Air (2018) reached #1 in the Kindle store and was a Washington Post bestseller five weeks in a row. She has also sold the translation rights to The Memory Watcher in several countries.

Kent also writes romance novels as Wall Street Journal and #1 Amazon bestselling author, Winter Renshaw.

Kent is a thirty-something wife and mother who lives somewhere in the middle of the USA. She is rarely seen without her trusty Mead notebook and laptop. When she’s not writing, she spends her time with her husband, kids, and their beloved dogs. She enjoys sunny and rainy days, hides behind oversized sunglasses, bakes sweet treats, and travels to warmer climates whenever possible.

Minka is represented by Jill Marsal of Marsal Lyon Literary Agency.

Minka Kent Books

Kent has written several psychological and domestic suspense thrillers, many of which are highly successful. Here is a complete list of her works, as well as some excerpts from each book.

The Memory Watcher (2016)

“When Autumn Carpenter stumbles upon the social media account of the family who adopted her infant daughter years ago, she finds herself instantly drawn into their picture-perfect existence.

From behind a computer screen, Autumn watches Grace’s every memory, from birthdays to holidays to bedtime snuggles. But what starts as an innocent fascination soon spirals into an addictive obsession that comes to a screeching halt the day the McMullen family closes their Instaface account without so much as a warning.

Frantic and desperate to reconnect with her daughter, Autumn applies for a nanny position with the McMullens, manipulating herself into Grace’s life under false pretenses. And it’s only then that Autumn discovers pictures lie, the perfect family doesn’t exist, and beautiful people? They have the ugliest secrets.”

The Perfect Roommate (2018)

“She’s my roommate.

I know how she takes her tea, how she organizes her closet.

I know when she goes to bed each night, what she eats for breakfast, the passcode on her phone.

I know she calls her mother on Mondays, takes barre on Thursdays, and meets her friends for drinks on Fridays.

But more important than any of that … I know what she did.”

The Thinnest Air (2018)

“A woman’s disappearance exposes a life of secrets in a twisting novel of psychological suspense from the author of The Memory Watcher.

Meredith Price is the luckiest woman alive. Her husband, Andrew, is a charming and successful financial broker. She has two lovely stepchildren and is living in affluence in a mountain resort town. After three years of marriage, Meredith’s life has become predictable. Until the day she disappears.

Her car has been discovered in a grocery store parking lot—purse and phone undisturbed on the passenger seat, keys in the ignition, no sign of struggle, and no evidence of foul play. It’s as if she vanished into thin air.

It’s not like Meredith to simply abandon her loved ones. And no one in this town would have reason to harm her. When her desperate sister, Greer, arrives, she must face a disturbing question: What if no one really knows Meredith at all? For Greer, finding her sister isn’t going to be easy…because where she’s looking is going to get very, very dark.”

The Stillwater Girls (2019)

“Two sisters raised in fear are about to find out why in a chilling novel of psychological suspense from the author of The Thinnest Air.

Ignorant of civilization and cautioned against its evils, nineteen-year-old Wren and her two sisters, Sage and Evie, were raised in off-the-grid isolation in a primitive cabin in upstate New York. When the youngest grows gravely ill, their mother leaves with the child to get help from a nearby town. And they never return.

As months pass, hope vanishes. Supplies are low. Livestock are dying. A brutal winter is bearing down. Then comes the stranger. He claims to be looking for the girls’ mother, and he’s not leaving without them.

To escape, Wren and her sister must break the rule they’ve grown up with: never go beyond the forest.

Past the thicket of dread, they come upon a house on the other side of the pines. This is where Wren and Sage must confront something more chilling than the unknowable. They’ll discover what’s been hidden from them, what they’re running from, and the secrets that have left them in the dark their entire lives.”

Upcoming Releases

In a highly anticipated release, Kent is set to release her 5th book, When I Was You on February 1, 2020. Here’s an excerpt from her upcoming novel:

“A stolen identity leads a woman down a dark and desperate path in a gripping novel of psychological suspense by Wall Street Journal bestselling author Minka Kent.

After barely surviving a brutal attack, Brienne Dougray rarely leaves her house. Suffering from debilitating headaches and memory loss, she can rely only on her compassionate new tenant, Dr. Niall Emberlin, a welcome distraction from the discomfiting bubble that has become her existence.

But Brienne’s growing confidence in her new routine is shaken when she stumbles across unsettling evidence that someone else is living as…her. Same name. Same car. Same hair. Same clothes. She’s even friended her family on social media. To find out why, Brienne must leave the safety of her home to hunt a familiar stranger.

What she discovers is more disturbing than she could have ever imagined. With her fragile mind.”
